Our team is skilled in the facade industry-leading heat transfer engineering software Physibel which allows us to provide complex 2D and 3D thermal modelling in order to precision analyse elemental detailing for all aspects of new build projects, refurbishment schemes and PAS2030 compliant detailing.
Our Technical Director Ben Edmondson, explains the benefits of this complete simulation software environment for the thermal analysis of building components, as part of our services and proposition covering EWI/ETICS and rainscreen cladding systems.
“By using 3D thermal modelling software we can commit beyond static 2D calculations to achieve accurate U-values for any wall type or interface where it is necessary to solve multi-dimensional heat transfer problems.
Physibel captures ψ-values (linear thermal transmittance) and χ-values (point transmittance) directly from the numerical solution, rather than relying on tabulated or approximate inputs that are used in one-dimensional steady-state layered constructions.
One of the limitations of traditional U-value calculations is that they are unable to handle complex inclusions or irregular inhomogeneous layers, which means that standard details including windows, doors and brackets are often not accurately considered in creating thermal breaks.
By modelling these details, we can support compliance with PAS2030 by providing evidence-based design decisions, improving energy efficiency outcomes, and helping to safeguard occupant comfort and building durability over the long term.
As the new build requirements become more stringent in Approved Document L, we can use this software to assess everything from beading and fixing performance to helping hand brackets and existing interfaces. It also reduces the risk of surface condensation and mould growth by identifying cold spots within the building envelope, which are often missed in simplified one-dimensional calculations.
Our 3D thermal modelling can measure the relative humidity of a completed room / wall meaning the risk of mould spore germination can be assessed in line with IEA/ British Standards guidance. By taking advantage of the modelling available it is possible to accurately ensure that buildings remain mould free for the final occupiers.”
